A – A Wrinkle in Time, Madeleine L’Engle

Loved: This was one of the first sci-fi/fantasy books I read as a kid. I loved that Meg was a smart, strong lead character, who still managed to be vulnerable and imperfect. I really identified with her. I also love L’Engle’s ability to make great secondary characters like Charles Wallace and Calvin. Plus, the logic, intellect, riddle aspect of the plot was so fun – to this day, I wish tesseracts existed!

Learned: Over the years, I keep coming back to this one as an example of how to build tension through strong personal stakes. Meg’s sole focus (almost to a fault) is saving her father…if she happens to save the world in the process, all the better. And I loved her for that!

  1. One of my favorite books. I also stumbled upon it when I was a child, and husband surpirsed me with the audio book a few years ago. I'm still amazed at how creative and different the worlds and characters L'Engle made are.

  2. I just reread this. Fantastic book. Though I'd have to say A Swiftly Tilting Planet is my favorite.

  3. I suspect I may be the only person who doesn't love this book. It's especially heinous when you know I'm a fantasy writing (former) English teacher.

  22. Yes, a great book and a great example of personal stakes. I also think it's a good example of how cliches can be used well - the book actually starts with the terribly cliche line, "It was a dark and stormy night!"

I remember going to see the film version at the Sprockets film festival with my mother - the one that became an ABC TV-movie. It was a pretty good adaptation, I think - bringing some elements of the Earth storyline into the 21st century, and great casting of the roles of Meg and Calvin in particular!
