Closing out our collection of sad-but-powerful country story songs is Whiskey Lullaby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss. I love that it's a duet of the two characters, and the haunting melody makes the lyrics that much more poignant.

ReplyDeleteI'd have to respectfully disagree with Alex. Most aren't sad, but the story ballads usually are, and with good reason. They sell. They resonate with the listeners. It's like writing a book and pulling the reader into an emotional investment with the characters. Country music just happens to be full of people who are genius at doing it.
I think Beyonce's new song Pretty Hurts, is really, really sad. "It's the soul that needs the surgery." :-)
