I'm from Wisconsin. The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald happened in Lake Superior (on its way back from a Wisconsin mill), and this song gets played a leeetle too much in local bars whenever someone gets angsty or nostalgic. Still, as far as conveying stories through music goes, this one tells a heck of a maritime tale.
The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald: Gordon Lightfoot
I enjoyed that song back when it came out, I had no idea it got played in bars when people are nostalgic. That's a rather interesting tidbit to know about the song!
ReplyDeleteIt gets played a lot here in Canada too. Not sure about bars but everywhere you can hear it although, not much lately, funnily enough.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard that song before, but it's an interesting one.

Wow I just listened to the first minute and was intrigued and depressed. First time hearing it.
ReplyDeleteI have this song on my I-Pod. Brings back memories. Happy to come across your blog, love your music theme.

I remember listening to this when I was a teen. I never realized until I was an adult that it was about a real event, and it made the song even more haunting.
ReplyDeleteI adore Gordon Lightfoot--and you're right. Lightfoot has some of the most amazing story songs out there. Well worth a listen, no matter what genre you typically enjoy!
