N – Narnia, Chronicles of, C.S. Lewis

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Movie Tie-in Edition (Narnia)
Loved: Just about everything! This book is such a classic – I can’t believe I didn’t read it until I was older. If I’d read it in my childhood, I would have opened every single wardrobe I could to find Narnia! This series gives a wonderful sense of escapism, and though it deals with heavy good vs. evil issues, it retains its optimism, innocence and strong family bonds.

Learned: This is another great example of worldbuilding. C.S. Lewis creates a fantastically detailed world, complete with a long storied history and amazing characters (talking animals!). I admire his style. It’s like sitting on my grandpa’s knee, listening to him weave me a tale!

  1. You know, when I was in 4th grade, my teacher read the series aloud to us. I never could get into it for some reason.

  2. I picked up my sister's set of Narnia books when I was 16 and read all 7 of them in 10 days. Love them, love them, love them.

And when I was 19 I worked in an antique auction house and I checked out every wardrobe just in case.

In my bedroom now I have an old ship's wardrobe that I bought for just £20 at a reclamation place. It has a sailing ship carved into its dark wood front and it reminds me of Narnia every time I look at it.

And I always say that one day I will have a wonderful garden that is accessed through a wardrobe. You don't need to be young to still be looking for Narnia!

  3. I think I actually did open every wardrobe and closet I came across for awhile after reading it. Thanks for reminding me! :)

    Happy A-Z!

  8. I read these really early on. I think perhaps a teacher read the first one to my second grade class or something, and then I read the rest by myself. They definitely set me on the path to loving fantasy for life.

  10. I love Narnia! There's a saying something like you should read the books three times in your life - once when you're young, once in your early adulthood, and once when you're much older. I was either in my late teens or early twenties when I read the whole series, so it's not that long ago, but I've definitely been wanting to reread them, especially since I became a book blogger.

    1. That's a really neat sentiment about re-reading. I might have already exceeded the three times though. :)

  11. It's a very interesting series with loads of symbolism. C.S. Lewis had quite the imagination. Excellent choice.

  13. I love the Narnia series. I've read them a few times over as a kid, and again as an adult when I was in hospital a few years ago. I wish they would make films out of the other books like The Magicians Nephew etc.
