Beating Time

It’s so tricky to squeeze in enough time for it all, isn’t it? Seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day! I try to carve out about an hour a day for pure writing, and at least an hour on one weekday and on weekends for other miscellaneous writing things like blogs, queries, etc. It’s not a perfect system but works pretty well for me.

How about you? How do you manage your time?

How Often Do You Write?

How Much Do You Write in a Typical Day?

I’m between "At least a little everyday" and "Multiple times a week," and I usually get to 500-1000 words. No matter where we fall though, the best we can do is try to move even the teeniest bit closer to the dream each day. That's all any of us can ask.

  1. I barely get any time to write - I know I should set aside time each day to do so, but everything else seems to get in the way. It's no excuse, though, so I should dedicate some proper time to it.

  2. What a timely post since my Monday (7/29) blog post is about procrastination. I agree that even the smallest forward momentum is better than none at all. As Martin Luther King Jr. said: If you can't fly then run, if you can't run then walk, if you can't walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.

  3. I'm trying my hardest to get a little in each day, but when things get busy the writing is the first thing to get dropped.
I'm getting better with it though, and I have two weeks off work soon so I'm hoping to get back on track.

  4. July was an incredibly busy month so not much writing. I'm hoping August will be better.

  5. I've been kind of keeping my head down and writing in the cave for a couple hours every day to try to finish my novel by fall. If I'm not physically writing, I'm thinking about the writing. :)

  6. That's sounding a lot like me, although I'd like to do better. :)

  7. I write a little every day, but when I'm working on a manuscript, it's at least 1700 words a day.

  8. Summer's always a tricky time I think, especially for those of us with little 'uns. I've been quite sporadic and random, but looking forward to getting back into some routine!

  9. Jamie - I know! Sometimes it seems like life gets a kick out of messing with writing time. Keep at it.

Jenn - Love that quote! It's something I need to remember when I'm at my "crawling" phases. :)

Heather - Ooh, I'm wishing two full weeks of amazing writing time. Enjoy!

Natalie - If you're anything like me, summers are especially tricky.

L.G. - Ha, yes. I don't think there's ever a time when writing isn't on my mind in one way or another. :)

David - Sounds like you're in good company.

Alex - Go you! That's great. I struggle to consistently crank out that many words in one sitting given my schedule...but some day. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Nick - Sporadic and random is okay too. ;)

  10. Interesting to see the variety. But it's great that most of us are actively working on getting in regular writing!

  11. You're right; even if we can't write 2,000 words a day, every word we DO write is one closer to seeing our dreams realized.
